Artist's Statement

I have always had a compulsion to draw and paint. In the beginning my paintings reflected a subjective, emotional response to the world around me; the work has now come to include a more objective view of how events and situations affect people.

My paintings are rooted in the thousands of pencil drawings I have done in sketch books. I am always playing with the balance between realism and the surreal and I want to push further into not only heightening characteristics in faces, but also incorporating tensions in full-bodied figures. People’s interactions and imbalances in societies are especially relevant to my work. My influences include Michelangelo, Rubens, Gustave Doré and Dante’s ‘The Divine Comedy’.

The paintings and drawings on this website represent only a small part of my current practice.
